Bethesda’s Northwest Biotherapeutics Expands Technical Team to Support Cancer Vaccine Manufacturing and Clinical Trials

Northwest Biotherapeutics, a Bethesda, Maryland-based biotechnology company developing personalized cancer immunotherapies, announced on October 26, 2026 that it has expanded its U.S. technical team to support manufacturing scale-up and preparations for additional clinical trials. The company is also restructuring selected positions to balance personnel costs while increasing its overall U.S. headcount.

The operational changes focus on two priorities: restarting U.S. manufacturing to supplement existing United Kingdom production capacity and preparing clinical trials for cancers beyond brain cancer.

New Technical Hires Support Manufacturing and Operational Growth

Northwest Biotherapeutics has added three positions across quality assurance, information technology, and investor relations to support its evolving operations.

The new appointments include:

  • Quality Assurance and Regulatory Affairs Manager: Previously served as Director of DC Operations at the Center for Immunotherapy at Roswell Park Cancer Center. The manager will oversee quality assurance, regulatory compliance with U.S. current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) requirements, and regulatory training for production personnel.
  • Director of Information Technologies: Previously served as Director of Technology at TeamLogic IT, Northwest Biotherapeutics’ external IT service provider. The director will support technology infrastructure, automation, and the handling, distribution, and tracking of personalized cancer vaccine products.
  • Manager of Investor Relations: Brings more than 30 years of institutional investment management experience, including work with traditional investment funds and hedge funds. The manager will assist with investor and shareholder communications.

The appointments are intended to strengthen the company’s technical and operational capabilities as it prepares to increase production activity.

Company Prepares to Restart U.S. Cancer Vaccine Manufacturing

A central priority is rebuilding U.S. manufacturing capacity to provide additional or backup production capability alongside existing operations in the United Kingdom.

Expanding production requires specialized expertise in quality assurance, regulatory compliance, and systems capable of managing personalized cell therapy products.

The new information technology director will support the company’s Chief Information Officer in preparing systems for increased operational activity, including the tracking and distribution of individualized cancer vaccine products.

Northwest Biotherapeutics has not disclosed a specific location, timeline, or production target for the planned U.S. manufacturing restart.

Workforce Restructuring Accompanies Technical Expansion

While adding specialized personnel, Northwest Biotherapeutics is also reviewing existing positions to manage operating expenses.

The company reported that it has eliminated one U.S. position so far and may make further reductions in roles that do not align with its operational priorities.

Despite these changes, Northwest Biotherapeutics expects a net increase in U.S. personnel while maintaining operating costs within approximately the same range as before the restructuring.

A similar workforce review is underway in the United Kingdom, where the company is evaluating staffing needs related to manufacturing scale-up and other priority operations.

Clinical Trial Preparations Extend Beyond Brain Cancer

The workforce expansion also supports Northwest Biotherapeutics’ plans to investigate its DCVax® personalized immunotherapy platform in additional cancers.

The company’s lead candidate, DCVax®-L, has completed a 331-patient Phase III clinical trial for glioblastoma (GBM), an aggressive form of primary brain cancer. Northwest Biotherapeutics has submitted a Marketing Authorisation Application (MAA) for commercial approval in the United Kingdom, which remains under review.

The company is also developing DCVax®-Direct for inoperable solid tumors. That program has completed a 40-patient Phase I clinical trial, with Phase II studies planned.

Northwest Biotherapeutics previously conducted a Phase I/II study of DCVax®-L for advanced ovarian cancer in collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania.

These programs form part of the company’s broader effort to evaluate dendritic cell-based immunotherapies across multiple solid tumor cancers.
