For Aretha Nalubega, an interest in science began early on. From chemical reactions and colors to the logic behind chemical equations, the subject sparked a curiosity that has stayed with her as she explored different branches of science.
Now pursuing a B.S. in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, and Bioinformatics at Towson University, Aretha continues to explore her interests in chemistry and biology. Her genetics coursework has introduced her to the complexity of organisms, while chemistry’s applications in areas like cosmetics and food continue to capture her attention.
Looking ahead, Aretha envisions a future in biotechnology and biopharmaceutical science, with a focus on innovation in drug development and transforming patient care.
We sat down with Aretha to learn more about her interest in science, what’s exciting her right now, and her aspirations for the future.
How did you get here?
My love for science started in the 7th grade, long before I knew what career I wanted or what field I would eventually fall into. I just knew that science felt right for me. Chemistry, especially, grabbed my attention in a way no other subject did — the reactions, the colors, the logic behind how everything worked. It captivated me from the moment I learned what a chemical equation was, and that spark never went away. Even as I grew older and explored different branches of science, chemistry stayed at the center of my curiosity and ultimately shaped the path that led me to biotechnology, molecular biology, and biochemistry.
What is currently blowing your mind right now?
A genetics class is captivating me right now because of how complex organisms really are.
Chemistry in different applications, for example, chemistry being used in cosmetics or even food.
